Vice President JD Vance bluntly warned Iran on Wednesday that it would be “dumb” to allow fragile ceasefire negotiations with the United States to collapse over ongoing Israeli military operations in Lebanon, describing the dispute as a “legitimate misunderstanding” rather than a deal-breaker.
Speaking to reporters on the tarmac in Budapest, Hungary, after meetings with Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Vance insisted the recent U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement, reached earlier this week following intense fighting that began in late February, never included Lebanon.

The truce, which reportedly covers direct hostilities between Washington and Tehran along with safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz, has been tested by continued Israeli strikes on Iran-backed Hezbollah
targets in Lebanon. “I think the Iranians thought that the ceasefire included Lebanon, and it just didn’t,” Vance said. “We never made that promise. We never indicated that was going to be the case.” He added that Lebanon “has nothing to do with them” in the context of the bilateral U.S.-Iran deal.
Vance emphasized that if Tehran chooses to walk away from broader talks — especially after what he described as Iran “getting hammered” in the recent conflict — over an issue not covered by the agreement, “that’s ultimately their choice. We think that would be dumb, but
that’s their choice.”

The vice president noted that Israel had signaled willingness to exercise some restraint in Lebanon to support the success of the negotiations. He is scheduled to lead high-level U.S. talks with Iranian representatives in Islamabad, Pakistan, this weekend, joined by special envoy Steve
Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The discussions are expected to address Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missiles, and regional proxy activities.

Iranian officials, through statements shared by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, had appeared to link the ceasefire to reduced violence in Lebanon, citing announcements from Pakistani mediators. However, U.S. officials maintain the core agreement focused narrowly on direct U.S.-
Iran de-escalation. The remarks come amid a volatile Middle East landscape, with Israel continuing airstrikes in Lebanon that have killed scores in recent days. Analysts say the Vance comments reflect the
Trump administration’s strategy of compartmentalizing conflicts while pushing for a longer-term understanding with Tehran.

As Vance prepares for the Pakistan talks, both sides face pressure to clarify terms and prevent the fragile pause from unraveling. Success could open pathways to wider regional stability, while failure risks renewed escalation across multiple fronts.
