At MWC 2026 in Barcelona, I sat down with Daniel Mai, Director Industrial Wireless Communication at Siemens, to dig into what Industrial 5G actually means beyond the buzzwords.
Daniel explains that Industrial 5G is not simply consumer 5G with an industrial sticker slapped on it. It has been adapted to meet the real-world needs of OT environments, where reliability, deterministic communication, and constant latency matter far more than headline-grabbing peak speeds.
In factories, steel plants, brownfield environments, clean rooms, and hazardous areas, the challenge is not just connectivity — it is ensuring that production keeps running safely and consistently.
We also get into the business case. Daniel gives a practical example from automotive manufacturing, where even a short network outage can result in major production losses. That is why licensed spectrum, predictable performance, and reliable wireless coverage across indoor and outdoor environments are so important.
The conversation also touches on real-world use cases including AGVs, AMRs, cranes, and flexible production environments, as well as a live Siemens demo at MWC combining Industrial 5G, physical AI, large language models, and on-prem AI.
If you want a grounded explanation of where Industrial 5G fits into the future of manufacturing, this is well worth a watch.
