One of the most powerful things you can do is put yourself out there and learn as you go. There is no failure, only lessons.
I've been developing skills as a consultant for 7 years and it's taught me how to professionally present myself, how to network efficiently, how to schedule meetings, how to orchestrate meetings, how to articulate the value I have to offer, how to qualify clients instead of them just qualifying you, how to manage projects, and how to manage my time. And I've learned how and when to terminate contracts. Some relationships need to be severed.
I've made way more in one hour based off of my own doing than I've ever earned at a job. It's not even close, at all. And I'm not telling you that a job is completely irrelevant, I'm just speaking my truth.
At my highest paid retail job as a Floor Supervisor, I made $20 an hour. As a consultant, I've made $100 in one hour on multiple occasions. And I've been able to create my own career that's more credible because I have work and results to show.
I've even gone door-to-door, ringing door bells, offering to rake yards in the autumn season before, and I made $50 an hour some days. No eqipument. Just me, my rake, my gloves, my shovel, and garbage bags. And I'm sure I could've made more if I was more bold about my ask.
But the going door-to-door allowed me to exercise my patience, overcome social anxiety, and embrace the power of positivity.
These were all things I developed because I tried sales too. I use to walk around NYC selling promo products for others companies. And I had to pitch to 150 to 200 people a day, non-stop. My first week was rough. But by the second week, I was selling out of everything I carried outside with me. I would even sell to people on the train on my way home just to make sure I hit my goal. Did it always work? No. But it built alot of grit.
I had a position where I had to do 75 to 100 cold calls a day, and send out 35-50 cold emails too. And there was so much rejection lol, people steamin on me, people hanging up on me. But I had days where I was able to set up meetings with the decision-maker so my manager could sell a product that I could make a commission on.
This is why I am the way that I am. And I think so many people could benefit from just trying things, being resourceful and learning a skill online, getting to know people.
