The story of the game Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, edited into a movie. Cal Kestis has been fighting the empire for 5 years, but he may finally have found hope of a path forward for those like him who are fleeing the Empire. This movie has been designed to look best on HDR displays, but I have created a custom SDR tonemapping so that this movie will look great on any display as well.
If you haven't seen my movies before, my goal is to take the story of a video game and cut it down to try to make it watchable in movie form. I want to create an experience that can be enjoyed whether you have played the game or not. Obviously, for those who haven't played the game or don't play games at all, this provides them with access to a story they otherwise would not have been able to experience, but I've found that even for those who have played the game, experiencing the story in a more condensed way like this can allow you to appreciate it more.
My focus is purely on the story, but this doesn't just mean making a cutscene compilation, because much of the story happens over the course of gameplay. So it's my job to figure out which gameplay scenes are necessary to the story, and how much of that gameplay must be included. I focus on what serves the story, so this isn't a walkthrough or longplay where I show every aspect of what the game has to offer. I do my research beforehand to have an idea of the layout of the level, which helps me cinematically direct the player and character at any moment where it would not interfere with the gameplay itself.
I also try to remove anything that would appear on screen to remind you that you're watching a game, such as HUD elements or button prompts. Thankfully, this game had a minimal HUD option which did remove some of those distractions, but unfortunately unlike some games, this option left way too many on screen elements, requiring me to do extensive VFX work to remove them. With this movie, I had to create 385 VFX shots to remove the HUD. During most gameplay moments, I was typically creating a VFX shot every 6 seconds of gameplay. That's how extensive the work was and why it took so long to produce this movie.
