On January 1st, 1995, Sega was riding high as the number one video game company in America. Though Nintendo was hot on their heels, the Genesis had won four Christmas seasons in a row against the Super NES! But times were changing, as 16-bit would soon fade away, and a new competitor in Sony would emerge. The key to success was Sonic the Hedgehog! But in 1995, Sega put the Blue Blur on the bench and went a different course. Did it work? This is the story of Sega in 1995 — The Year of NO Sonic!

In the 16-Bit Wars, the scorecard at the end of 1994 saw Sega reporting 4 million Genesis sets sold that year, 17.5 million overall, and over $3 billion in revenue. The one-two punch of Sonic 3 & Knuckles and a rock-bottom price for the Genesis, often under $99, led to millions in sales and millions of happy new owners. The added revenue from the Sega CD, Game Gear, and 32X helped bump up those numbers.
Nintendo sold 3.7 million Super NES sets in 1994. Donkey Kong Country was their big game, selling 2 million copies in just six weeks. However, Nintendo posted losses that year, thanks to a strong, rising yen and a weaker year overall compared to 1993.
In essence, the scene was a 50/50 split. As to who was “winning the war”… well… that was whichever controller you were holding at the time.
In prior years, each Sonic game was centered around a public event: Sonic 2sday in ’92, Sonic Mania Day in ’93, and Hedgehog Day in ’94! Each was successful, but behind the scenes, Sega was about to hit a switch track that would sideline “the most famous hedgehog in the world.”
The Japanese Genesis, the Mega Drive, was not as popular as it was in the US, UK, or other places. Sega reached a 20% market share in Japan, but that clearly wasn’t cutting it. A new system, The Saturn, had been in the works and was ready for Japan in 1994 — and the rest of the world in 1995.

Sega of America, led by Tom Kalinske, embarked on a wide-net strategy for 1995: catch as many non-Genesis owners as possible, move some existing owners to the Saturn, and keep those not quite ready satisfied with another year of great games.
A few highlights from 1995 have been repeated ad infinitum

But how did the year turn out on the whole for the boys in blue? Let’s see how things went down in Sega Land in 1995!

Video Clips by the great RGTV and Vampire Robot. One clip came from the BBC. Some Game Gear Footage by LPA. As for who actually recorded the E3 1995 video, sorry I have no idea...
