We’ve been seeing the same pattern over and over: a “helpful” blog that’s actually dragging local sites down. Under the old keyword-based algorithm, publishing a new post for every variation made sense. Under today’s entity-based and helpful-content-focused world, that same strategy creates crawl resistance and competing pages that quietly kill performance.
Most local business blogs are just repeating the same ideas with different modifiers. That redundancy forces Google to guess which page is most relevant for a query, so instead of one strong ranking, you get several weak ones and a ton of impression burn (lots of impressions, no clicks). On top of that, you’re burning crawl budget on content that adds no real value to the site.
The fix is surprisingly simple: stop blogging on the money site just to “stay active,” and start pruning. Use Search Console and Analytics to identify posts with high impressions and zero clicks, confirm they aren’t driving traffic from other channels, then either remove them or move that content to external branded assets where it can’t compete with your core pages.
In episode 564 of our weekly Hump Day Hangouts, one participant asked why having a blog on a site might hurt SEO.
The exact question was:
A few HDHO ago you mentioned that having a blog on your site might actually hurt you... WHY? Can you give your reasoning pls? Also I reached out to your phone number and left a message, but I think its an old cell phone number? How do I get your current number so I can spam the hell out of you ;) jk
