In episode 590 of our weekly Hump Day Hangouts, one participant asked how to help a client break through a potential proximity filter or "death cluster" after moving their business to a new city and losing their top ranking to a lesser-optimized competitor.
The exact question was:
Hey Bradley, long-time follower of Semantic Mastery. I have a client whose case has stumped me recently. Here is the case: they were ranking #1 in City 1 in their industry for 7 years. They expanded and had a better location built out in City 2. They left City 1 to go to City 2, which is a nearby city. Their rankings instantly fell on their Google listing to #20. They brought me in 4 months later. Their website and branding also needed a reset. We completed the new site 1 month ago; it was a 3-month build. During the 3 months, we got rid of harmful citations, made new citations, and used BrightLocal to deliver services. We optimized and geotagged images to the new location, optimized the landing page, and all of that. The client is stuck at #6-#9 with 501 reviews, versus a competitor with 120 reviews. We found out it is because the competitor has been in their same location a couple of feet away for 5+ years. Within the client's 1-mile radius, there are 3 businesses in the same industry, so we are afraid they are caught in a death cluster situation where Google is filtering only 1 out of the 3 businesses for the city results for the service. That means their competitor with lesser optimization is ahead of them, and they are not getting any visibility. How can we fix this? We are making frequent GMB posts for them, as well as targeting reviews to name the city and service for the location, but the needle hasn't been moving much. Which actions would help this listing break through that filter for Google the most? Thanks so much! We've been ranking our clients at #1 for a while now, and this case has genuinely stumped us!
